Health Literacy With Tamvoes

Health Literacy With Tamvoes

Health literacy skills allow patients to control their well-being by making intelligent healthcare choices.

Do you have good health Literacy? Unless you're a trained medical professional, I feel confident that you've likely encountered challenges when dealing with the health care system. Communication with doctors and family while also dealing with your health struggles surely makes you wish for a better solution.

Understanding the medical situation you are in, whether as a patient or a caregiver, in addition to managing all the necessary paperwork, creates more work at a time when your focus needs to be elsewhere. Juggling all the information and communication surrounding a medical diagnosis can strain both your mental and physical health.

Becoming more health literate is essential but time-consuming. Health literacy skills allow patients to control their well-being by making intelligent healthcare choices, improving their communication with doctors, and giving them the information they need to advocate for themselves in a medical setting.

Fortunately, there is a solution, and we're talking about that today.

TAMVOES is a health management platform supporting the information of Individuals, Families, and their Professional Team. TAMVOES is a women-led startup with the goal to empower individuals with their health information, giving them the ability to make more informed health care decisions.

My Grandma Has Dementia – Helping Kids Understand

My Grandma Has Dementia – Helping Kids Understand

My Grandma Has Dementia book has beautiful illustrations children will appreciate.

Grandma has dementia can be a scary & confusing statement for kids. My Grandma had vascular dementia, and despite being an adult, it was very troubling to know how best to deal with her. To be honest, it could be a little scary at times. She wasn't the warm and loving Grandmother I knew when I was a kid.

Teaching children what dementia is and how to live with someone experiencing the disease is becoming more critical. For young kids, grandma having dementia can be a frightening thing. Fear can turn into spending less time with the loved one – I'm sure you can visualize the negative spiral this can cause.

Thankfully, more books are becoming available for kids to help them understand what is happening. “My Grandma Has Dementia” is a brand new book published this year (2021) that is one part educational tool, one part beautiful tribute.

Safe Visits During Covid & Beyond

Safe Visits During Covid & Beyond

Visits with our loved ones have been an enormous challenge in the past year (or more). Even though visits are happening more thanks to the vaccines, keeping our loved ones safe is still a high priority. My podcast guest & I discussed many ways to have safe visits during Covid and beyond.

Dementia Needs are Human Needs

Dementia Needs are Human Needs

Dementia Needs are Human Needs is an understanding that will help us all.

Much of what we call “negative behaviors” in those living with Dementia are expressions of unmet needs. Someone who wanders may need more physical activity or stimulation. When someone refuses to participate in something we think they'd enjoy, do we ask why? Or, have we expected them to accept a preprogrammed activity?

People living with Dementia have personal needs and they still know what they want and how they want to live. Unfortunately, their disease makes it difficult for them to express themselves in a way we understand. We need to find the empathy to understand their needs and address those needs with person-centered care.

We are all human beings with human needs. Dementia does not change that. If you're confused by their reactions/responses, ask yourself – How would I feel in this same situation? What would I want? Please resist the urge to feel pity and sorrow; respect and dignity will go further towards ensuring them an optimal life.

Alzheimer’s Caregivers-Sending You Encouragement Today

Alzheimer’s Caregivers-Sending You Encouragement Today

Being one of the 16+ million Alzheimer's caregivers can be one of the longest marathons you'll ever undertake. I am unaware of anyone who has gone on this journey alone. It's entirely reasonable to need help. Getting help and taking care of yourself is critical to taking good care of your loved one.

“Accidents” Aren't Normal Aging – Learn How To Avoid Them

“Accidents” Aren't Normal Aging – Learn How To Avoid Them in my conversation with Dr. Elena.

Urinary incontinence in the elderly is a prevalent, bothersome and costly problem, and is not necessarily a normal part of aging. Structural changes in the aging bladder and urethra may cause the elderly to the development of urinary incontinence.

During my conversation with Elena, I learned of the many reasons people become incontinent. I had no idea that some everyday behaviors can be problematic. Tuning in to this episode may not initially be a high priority, but you'll be glad you did when you avoid many of the problems that incontinence causes!

Given that most caregivers end up dealing with toileting issues as well as UTIs, understanding how to lessen these challenges is a big benefit.

Forget Me Knot – A Journey to Support Caregivers

Forget Me Knot – A Journey to Support Caregivers

The Forget Me Knot crew will row nearly 4,000 miles of open ocean to raise funding and awareness for those who care for dementia patients

Who is behind the Forget Me Knot campaign? Johnny Ball watched his Mother care for his Dad for nearly two decades. Being a part of her journey made it clear that those who support caregivers needed more help. The relentless demands of care commonly lead to depression and other mental health issues. Johnny wants to change that.

The Forget Me Knot crew will row nearly 4,000 miles of open ocean to raise funding and awareness for those who care for dementia patients by supporting Dementia UK Admiral Nurses. Their challenge will be long and grueling – but not compared to that faced by a dementia carer.

In the UK, Dementia UK provides specialized dementia support for families through their Admiral Nurse service. When things get challenging or complex for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving compassionate one-to-one support, expert guidance, and practical solutions that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

A Gift of Knowledge & Memories

A Gift of Knowledge & Memories

We are more than our vital statistics. Sharing our knowledge and memories are part of the human experience

Our brains can be the best vault for keeping knowledge and memories, but others can't access the information. Many of us joke that it would be nice if we could “download” our brains. We store vast quantities of data, stories, and memories. How would we feel if someone came up with a solution to help us share what we've locked in our minds?

While there is no current option that allows complete sharing of the data in our brains, there is an option available you're going to want to know about. Collecting memories in addition to vital information is one way to honor your loved one and reduce stress in the process.

We are more than our vital statistics. Sharing our wisdom and memories are part of the human experience. Now you have an option for collecting, storing, and sharing all of what you know.

Before There’s a Cure – CBD?

Before There’s a Cure – CBD?

At the same time, we're looking for a cure for Alzheimer's; are we ignoring a potential natural ally? At the very least, could CBD be a preventative treatment? According to researchers at California's Salk Institute, their 2017 study has found evidence that cannabinoids such as CBD could help remove dementia from brain cells.

In the hope that we can avoid developing the disease, or at the very least reducing its effects, are we missing out? Why are we afraid to investigate this option? Are we ignoring something that could be a potential cure?

There are uses for CBD for many people. CBD does not have THC, which causes the high of which we're familiar in one way or another. This episode is a conversation on the uses of CBD. We also touch on the politics of legalization, which I hope you'll find interesting and informative.

Parenting Your Parent

Parenting Your Parent

Caregiving responsibilities can be challenging at any age, but compared with older peers; millennials are at a stage of life that can exacerbate the challenges. The average age of a millennial caregiver is 27. Instead of focusing on their careers, this generation of adults is attempting to live in two different worlds.
