More Caregiver’s Guide to Advanced Alzheimer’s

Finding quality advice for the advanced stages of Alzheimer's can be a challenge.

Caring for someone with advanced Alzheimer's disease is a challenge. It can make you feel like you're on a hamster wheel – running in circles, trying the same things over and over with no effect on your loved one. You may find it challenging to connect with your loved one ad to understand what those living with Alzheimer's disease are going through. The Busy Caregivers Guide to Advanced Alzheimer's Disease gives you a model designed to help you understand, cope with, and handle some of the most challenging behaviors associated with this disease. This guide provides you with tools to be encouraging while reinforcing independence and quality of life for your loved one.

In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Stelter and I discuss specific advice on how to manage many common challenges in your caregiving. The following episode discusses specific challenges you may encounter and ways to tackle them in the most positive way possible.

Dementia Caregiving Advice with Bill Cohen

Dementia Caregiving Advice with Bill Cohen

Dementia Caregiving is something most of us continue to share even after our caregiving is over.

Are you looking for dementia caregiving advice? When you think of caregiving, what feelings come to mind? Surely, overwhelmed, exhausted, hopelessness and loneliness are some of the top emotions you're experiencing. If you don't know where to get help or support, this is the episode for you!

Finding Alzheimer's support is almost as challenging as caregiving itself. When learning of the diagnosis, most families find themselves searching for answers and support. Many of us turn to books or the internet; others turn to social media looking for a community.

Imagine if you knew, in advance, what to plan for and what to expect. How much easier would your caregiving journey be if you had already known someone who has experienced what you'll be experiencing?

My conversation with Bill Cohen is specifically on caregivers turned dementia caregiving support people. I believe you'll find that Bill and I have a lot in common in our respective journies.

Care Partner Support

Care Partner Support

Dementia is likely only one factor in the support a care partner needs.

As a care partner, you must learn how to navigate your family situation healthily for everyone involved. A dementia diagnosis is often not the only factor at play in a family situation. Each family brings their unique experiences, roles, values, goals, and expectations of each other. Differing perspectives and opinions are natural and to be expected.

Being a care partner involves adapting to your current circumstances. Additionally, changing roles from what you're known before is to be expected. If you are the care partner for a parent, the dynamic between the two of you has changed from them being your caretaker when you were a child to you becoming their caretaker as an adult.
