Telling Your Story for Publication

Telling Your Story for Publication

Everyone has a story, this episode talks about how to get it ready for publication.

Everyone has a story to tell. Back in early fall 2017, I had an experience with my Mom that was funny after it was all over. Retelling the experience online garnered a fair number of comments that I should write a book. I thought the same thing, but I thought it would be a better book if I waited for Mom's Alzheimer's journey to end.

Three months later, I had a crazy idea to start a podcast. That's been a significant journey on its own, and it's had plenty of benefits. I have not abandoned the idea of writing a book, I just needed an angle that was fresh enough to be worth the effort. Understanding when the right idea came along, I'd know.
Along my podcast hosting journey, I've “met” a lot of people. Everyone is interesting and has a unique perspective on caregiving. Sometimes, people find me, and occasionally, their story isn't one I thought of telling.

That's the case with today's guest. He's the author of 2 best-selling books, the host of a top-rated technology podcast, and his third book is due out this summer. We connected through a service that matches people with writers and reporters. Yours truly will have two quotes about podcasting in his new book.

When Ramesh told me he'd be a guest any time, I wanted I asked him what he would speak on, and that's how today's episode was born.

While planning for our chat, the idea for my book popped into my head. Just like I knew it would when the idea was ready to be born.

Fall Prevention with Dr. Elena

Fall Prevention with Dr. Elena

Falls can be deadly for older adults.

Fall prevention is an important part of caregiving.  Most of us have probably heard a story about someone who is healthy, vibrant, active even, falling, breaking a hip, and dying within a few weeks. If you haven't tuned in to the episode on Frailty, that explains a lot of the “why” this happens. This week, Dr. Elena is back talking about how we can prevent falls from happening in the first place.

There are many good reasons to do what we can to prevent falls, but some of the less obvious ones might interest you. Did you know that when an older adult falls, their hospital stays can be twice as long? If you're a Dr. Elena fan then you know hospitals can be the worst place for older adults.

The risk for falling increases with age and the risk is greater for women. Insert eye roll emoji here. One-fourth of seniors who fracture a hip from a fall will die within six months of the injury. Approximately 9,500 deaths in older Americans are associated with falls each year. Obviously. fall prevention is necessary for all of us to understand.

The statistics also prove how important it is to maintain our balance as we age too. I was blessed to have a personal trainer who was 14 years older than me (and female). If you think that meant she was easier on me you're wrong, but she did have a unique focus on how to use exercise to age well. Balance moves were an important part of what she taught me.
Balance & Fall Prevention
I've been working on a new program and one of the moves is 100% balance. There are four options to increase the challenge. I'm working on the hardest variation, standing on one foot, knee at a 45-degree angle to the floor, eyes closed. I make sure there is something to grab for stability so I don't fall over and land on a dog but I'm getting better!

One day I'll post an Instagram story video with the 4 different moves. As soon as I can do all of them without falling over!

Becoming More Me With EFT

Becoming More Me With EFT

Becoming more me with EFT is another way of learning coping skills.

What is EFT? Your body is more powerful than you can imagine. Filled with life, energy, and a compelling ability for self-healing, you can take control of this power by engaging in a tapping practice.

Having been documented extensively, the benefits of tapping (EFT) include the ability to shift our thoughts and mood more quickly than conventional therapies. Tapping is a gentle form of soothing touch. Brain wave studies show that tapping energy affects the deep subconscious. Touch is comforting.

No one knows how EFT works. However it works, tapping seems to activate our body’s innate self-healing intelligence and allows us to transform our lives. Case histories abound, showing tremendous changes in anxieties, fears, and phobias.

How Food Affects Our Brain Health

How Food Affects Our Brain Health

Food is an important part of our brain health.

Does food affect our brain health?

Our brains are always working, always turned on. It manages everything that happens in our lives; our thoughts, movements, reactions, emotions, and the mechanics of staying alive. It's working hard even while we're sleeping. Understandably, because of all this activity, our brains require a constant source of fuel. This fuel comes from the food we drink, and like grades of gasoline, higher quality can make a big difference.

High-quality brain fuel comes from foods high in vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. We may not notice the effects of poor eating until it's too late. We may like our comfort foods, but does our brain?

Have you ever had an instance where you can't stop eating potato chips or pizza? There's a simple reason. The simple carb combined with a high-fat content fires up the brain's signals to continue consuming. While we may laugh at this phenomenon, it's our brain telling us it needs better fuel. We don't get the right message.

This is a first in our monthly series on brain health with Dr. Howard.  Brain health is an important topic to me because it's our best defense against disease.

Yoga 4 Busy Caregivers

Yoga 4 Busy Caregivers

If you have 5 minuets, you can destress with a quick yoga practice.

Yoga practice is probably something you think you don't have time to start. If you have five minutes, my guest can show you ways to help relieve stress, anxiety, and more. As with most of us, my guest, Jo Bregnard, had to learn about caregiver self-care the hard way.

Despite a healthy lifestyle, and just three months after her husband suffered a severe burn injury, Jo was diagnosed with breast cancer. While her health issues were a challenge, her yoga practice didn't take off until her husband suffered a frightening heart issue.

Following this new situation, Jo learned to find true comfort on her yoga mat. This joy encouraged her to start teaching in 2014. Her yoga classes include beginners, prenatal, restorative, meditation, and Fluid yoga. That's just for starters!

As we all know, when we think we've got our lives under control, something happens to change it all. Jo's life took another turn in when she started helping to care for her Dad, making long drives on the weekends to get to his home.

Realizing that how she was living was not sustainable, Jo added yoga for caregivers to her offerings. You can find peace, relaxation, and more with simple practices that you can complete in just a few minutes.

Engaging Activities for Every Stage

Engaging Activities for Every Stage

Activities are an essential tool for caregivers.

It all started because of a lack of activities. If it weren't for today's guest, there might never have been a Fading Memories podcast. I searched for ways to engage with my Mom and came up short every time. If I had had the list you're about to hear; it might have been a different story for both of us.

Activities are an essential tool for caregivers. Our loved ones need the stimulation. Suitable, engaging activities will provide them with enjoyment, challenges, a way to pass the time constructively, helping keep them happy. If you find the right activity, you may discover a way to give them a sense of purpose. We all need to feel useful, or we can become very unpleasant.

Some ideas from Lorretta are easy to implement immediately. Stick to bright colors, keep in mind the five senses, especially if they're in the later stages of their disease. Have as much variety on hand, and search your home first. Lorretta is adamant that there are lots of items around your house that will entertain them.

It can be different every day, and you never know what will appeal to them. What works today may not work tomorrow, and what doesn't work today may work tomorrow. Just be creative and don't be judgmental about what they like.

Medications & Memory with Dr. Elena

Medications & Memory with Dr. Elena

Medications often help maintain health and well-being, studies have repeatedly shown that many older adults suffer from medication problems.

As caregivers to an older person, the chances are they are taking a number of prescription medications.

Have you ever wondered if they are on the proper medications? Do you worry about how side effects and interactions may contribute to other health problems?

These are practical concerns to have. Although medications often help maintain health and well-being, studies have repeatedly shown that many older adults suffer from medication problems.

In this episode, I am joined, once again, by Dr. Elena. She and I discuss common medications prescribed to older adults and how we should evaluate them for effectiveness versus side effects. Many medicines have side effects that can cause memory issues, balance issues, many of the symptoms we commonly shrug off as normal aging. A thorough evaluation at least twice a year is ideal, allowing you to avoid potential problems.

This episode is a little shorter than others, so be sure to listen to the end, where Dr. Elena tells us how she has had success slowing dementia progression. It's a great story to end the episode.

MediCaid & You – All You Need to Know

MediCaid & You – All You Need to Know

Using a Medicaid professional can be the difference between success & failure when applying.

Medicaid is available under many circumstances, but the path to get there is filled with challenges. Did you know, there are services available to assist families through the Medicaid application and planning process.?

Why use one of these services? Knowing what documentation is required is needed is vast. Understanding what you can do and what you should do can be daunting if you're not a professional dealing with these cases daily.

Not all of us have the personality to handle this bureaucratic obstacle course. For these reasons and more, I am sharing with you the knowledge of a Medicaid Planning professional.

There is a big misconception that to qualify for Medicaid, you have to have no assets, or they will take all of your money. In most states, your assets cannot exceed $2,000. That's the scary part that everyone hears.

Thankfully, there are many gray areas when applying. Giving these factors consideration does play a part in the overall application. There are many ways to save assets, and that's why using a professional is essential.
