Slow Puncture – Destigmatizing Dementia

Slow Puncture – Destigmatizing Dementia

Peter Berry uses cycling as a way to remove the stigma from a dementia diagnosis.

Deb Bunt's life changed when she meet cyclist, Peter Berry (who had an early-onset dementia diagnosis at age 50). As she and Peter cycled together, their friendship grew and he started to share the story of his dementia diagnosis. When he said, “I fear I am just going to forget who I am,” Deb offered to keep a note of his thoughts for him. Thus the beginnings of the book Slow Puncture, Living Well With Dementia was born.

“Dementia is a diagnosis for the whole family,” Peter says, “but don’t keep it secret because it will eat away at the whole family.” Since that day, he has learned to live with his very own dementia monster. From depression and suicide attempts through to his determination to confront his dementia, Peter has embarked on a series of challenges to show that life isn't over with dementia.

Looking at Peter when he is cycling, you would never know that this fit, healthy man is living with dementia. His goal now is to do what he can to erase the stigma of his diagnosis. He does this by raising money for dementia charities, cycling hundreds of miles in his quest to show that life is always worth living.

Oral Care for People With Dementia

Oral Care for People With Dementia

Oral Care & Dementia has their own challenges and rewards.

Oral care for people living with dementia presents unique challenges to their care partners. Imagine, arranging for a dental house call because Mom's breath is horrible, only to discover she has dentures!  This is just one of many fascinating stories today's guest, Dr. Joy V. Poskozim shares with us. We discussed many practical tips for assisting our loved ones in oral care, dental appointments, and more.

There’s an old saying about the eyes being windows to the soul. But the latest medical and dental research shows that the mouth truly is a window into one’s overall health. Looking out for a loved one’s health means not only keeping an eye on their nutritional intake and physical capabilities, but also on their teeth and gums.

This episode is full of laughs and great information you won't want to miss!

After you tune in, check out Dr. Joys website. Good info there too!

Teepa Snow & The GEMS Model

Teepa Snow & The GEMS Model

Utilizing Teepa Snow's GEMS Model will help you have less frustration in your care responsibilities.

I'm excited to have Teepa Snow as my guest for my 200th episode. We discussed her Gems Model for dementia care along with many laughs and a few personal insights. When creating her Gems model, Teepas's goal was to help care partners provide better support for a person with ever-changing conditions. It is a way to help them live fully in the moment. I found a great understanding of how to provide better care when I learned about the Gems model, which is why I wanted her to tell you about it directly.

Any disease that causes some form of dementia forces us to reckon with what our loved one is losing. The Gems model helps us to focus on, and utilize, what skills they have left. By appreciating what is changing and what is still possible, we can have more positive interactions, more productive communication, and care that is more effective and less challenging for all concerned.

Dementia Caregiving Advice with Bill Cohen

Dementia Caregiving Advice with Bill Cohen

Dementia Caregiving is something most of us continue to share even after our caregiving is over.

Are you looking for dementia caregiving advice? When you think of caregiving, what feelings come to mind? Surely, overwhelmed, exhausted, hopelessness and loneliness are some of the top emotions you're experiencing. If you don't know where to get help or support, this is the episode for you!

Finding Alzheimer's support is almost as challenging as caregiving itself. When learning of the diagnosis, most families find themselves searching for answers and support. Many of us turn to books or the internet; others turn to social media looking for a community.

Imagine if you knew, in advance, what to plan for and what to expect. How much easier would your caregiving journey be if you had already known someone who has experienced what you'll be experiencing?

My conversation with Bill Cohen is specifically on caregivers turned dementia caregiving support people. I believe you'll find that Bill and I have a lot in common in our respective journies.

Care Partner Support

Care Partner Support

Dementia is likely only one factor in the support a care partner needs.

As a care partner, you must learn how to navigate your family situation healthily for everyone involved. A dementia diagnosis is often not the only factor at play in a family situation. Each family brings their unique experiences, roles, values, goals, and expectations of each other. Differing perspectives and opinions are natural and to be expected.

Being a care partner involves adapting to your current circumstances. Additionally, changing roles from what you're known before is to be expected. If you are the care partner for a parent, the dynamic between the two of you has changed from them being your caretaker when you were a child to you becoming their caretaker as an adult.

Health Disparities Cause More Health Issues (with Dr/ Howard)

Health Disparities Cause More Health Issues (with Dr/ Howard)

How do health disparities affect African American's?

This is another conversation with Dr. Howard, this time on the health disparities the African American community faces. He's passionate about teaching the African American community about brain health. He's put together talks and programs in communities of color and the topic of why blacks don't like to go to the doctor was a natural suggestion from him.

As is normal for us, we start on the topic, but we meander on to other, related topics, then return to the main idea. Why is this a good episode to listen to? Understanding the challenges we all face is the quickest way to make changes. Understanding health disparities, like understanding Alzheimer's,  will allow us to better help our friends and neighbors.

As well as we'd like to think the world is equal, unfortunately, that's not always the case. Rather than feeling like we're unable to help, the mere fact of understanding can go a long way.

More Memory Health Options

More Memory Health Options

Memory Health supplements have undergone clinical trials. They're definitely worth a try.

It changes your whole world when a loved one begins to suffer from the effects of memory loss, brain injury, or brain disease. Ed personally experienced this with his mother, who one day had no idea who he was. She was suffering from a form of dementia and it was painful for him to watch her fade away and eventually lose her life to a debilitating brain disease. EdI felt compelled to do something, anything, to help other people avoid watching their loved one suffer. Ed is one of the founders of Memory Health. Their passion is the prevention of suffering and heartache caused by neurodegenerative brain issues.

Memory Health Awarded Three International Treatment Patents

Memory Health has received three treatment patents for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease from the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland.

Four clinical trials have also validated the fact that Memory Health works for not only diseased brains but also healthy brains.

The effectiveness of our premium nootropic has been proven in double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. The results of these clinical trials showed improvement in memory, cognitive function, mental health, mood, and overall brain health across both segments of healthy and diseased brains.

The Transformative Power of Neurofeedback Therapy

The Transformative Power of Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeed back in the earlier stages could help plateau the disease.

Louloua Smadi understands the desperation of loving someone with a life limiting cognitive disease. Her brother, Milo, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at two and a half years of age. Today, he is training to become a professional pastry chef.

Everything began to change when the family met Dr. Lynette Louise. Her integrative approach using neurofeedback and play was the catalyst that helped Milo to thrive and grow. Louloua even used the therapy herself to overcome poor concentration and focus.

Greatly impressed with her own improvements, she was inspired to become a practitioner herself. Her path from client to clinician illustrates the different approaches to healing using neurofeedback and highlights the gap between the research and clinical worlds.

Neurofeedback, like dynamic learning, asks your brain to do things in a new way. This treatment can help stabilize our loved ones, it can help us prevent the onset of the disease, and can really help all of us age well.
